Clients come into our practice daily to purchase anti-aging products. We always ask what sunscreen they are using. Why? Sunscreen is the #1 anti-aging product, and if you’re not using it daily you probably shouldn’t invest a lot of money in corrective products and treatments. Did you know that it takes about 10 years for your skin to show damage? That is why in your 30’s you will all of a sudden start to feel like you are getting older. You will start seeing more sun spots, freckles, wrinkles and dry skin. What you do when you’re young is important to how you will look later. Bronzed skin may look good in your teens and twenties but it’s not at all pretty when the damage reaches the surface of your face. It’s easy to live in the moment of youth and think, “oh, I’ll worry about that tomorrow” but I promise you, you will regret it. I do, and we hear it every day from our clients. So protect your skin from sun damage! Wear UV-protective clothing, wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses and of course, a broad-spectrum sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. We suggest wearing sunscreen daily even on the cloudiest days and even when you plan to stay indoors. That way you’re in the habit of incorporating it into your daily routine. Reapplying sunscreen throughout the day is also important. For women, we suggest keeping a face powder with SPF in your purse. There are some on the market with an SPF of 50 for easy touch-ups. Also, don’t forget to apply sunscreen daily to your chest and hands. Sun damage to these areas will give away your age every time regardless of how well you protect your face.
If you ask a woman over the age of 40 with beautiful skin, “What’s your secret to beautiful skin?” the majority of the time she will say sunscreen. It’s that important. The good news is if you spent the summers of your youth bronzing your skin and the damage is already there, we can correct the damage and make your skin healthy looking and radiant once again. But if you don’t change your sun-worshipping ways, there is no point in investing the money. Sunscreen is the #1 anti-aging product!
